Abstract: With the growth of the Internet and the advances in security technology,
conducting healthcare commerce on the Internet will become an important trend.
Patient will be able to purchase prescription drug on the Internet and make
payment through Secure Electronic Transaction (SET) systems. The interchange of
healthcare information and transactions among the pharmacy, hospital and
insurance company will also be processed on the basis of Electronic Data
Interchange (EDI) standards.
However, SET only considers the transactions
among the Consumer, Merchant, Issuer and Acquirer, while EDI mainly focuses on
data interchange among different organizations. The participating roles in
Internet healthcare commerce not only include the Patient, Pharmacy, Issuer and
Acquirer, but also contain the Hospital, Insurance Company and Bank. The
purchase order should be made according to doctor's prescriptions. Furthermore,
the amount of payment should be determined by querying the insururce company to
obtain the insurance coverage. To effectively process the healthcare payment,
Internet healthcare commerce needs to integrate SET and healthcare EDI.

In this work, an Internet healthcare commerce architecture is proposed to
integrate the healthcare EDI and SET. The data interchange and payment
transactions among Patient, Hospital, Pharmacy, Bank and Insurance Company are
carried out on the Internet. The proposed architecture effectively integrates
the processing of healthcare payment and healthcare data interchange. A
prototype system is developed to demonstrate the proposed Internet healthcare
commerce architecture.
